Hennick Humber Hospital Opened Its Doors to 150 Students to Explore the Future of Healthcare

Annual Take Our Kids to Work Day experience gave young people a firsthand look at the people, technology and career possibilities shaping modern healthcare

TORONTO, Nov. 04, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- What did the future of healthcare look like through the eyes of 150 students?

On November 4, Hennick Humber Hospital welcomed 150 students for an immersive Take Our Kids to Work Day experience designed to bring the future of healthcare to life and introduce young people to the wide range of people, skills, technology and career pathways that made modern healthcare possible. Fair Chance Learning supported the experience as a program delivery partner, helping create career-connected learning opportunities that give students a closer look at the skills, roles and possibilities shaping the future of work.

The experience built on Fair Chance Learning’s ongoing work with Hennick Humber Hospital to connect young people with meaningful career exploration and real-world learning. Together, the hospital and Fair Chance Learning created opportunities for students to learn directly from healthcare professionals, experience modern workplace technologies, and discover career pathways they may not have previously considered.

Throughout the day, students stepped beyond the traditional view of healthcare careers to explore how innovation is changing the way care is delivered, including tours of the hospital's Command Centre, Pharmacy and Logistics departments, demonstrations from Volunteer Services, the Fracture Clinic and Medical Imaging teams, a careers panel discussion featuring healthcare professionals, and a hands-on design challenge exploring future healthcare careers.

The goal was simple: help young people see possibilities they may not have considered before.

"While Hennick Humber Hospital is known for innovation and technology, our greatest asset has always been in our people - behind every advancement is a dedicated team who make exceptional care possible every day,” says Joe Gorman, Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs at Humber River Health. “As healthcare organizations focus on building the workforce of the future, we believe it's important to inspire the next generation and showcase the many rewarding careers in healthcare. That's why we value our partnership with Fair Chance Learning and the opportunity to help young people see themselves as part of the future of healthcare."

For students considering what comes next in their education and careers, the Take Our Kids to Work Day experience helped make the connection between what they were learning and where those skills could take them in the future.

Rather than simply hearing about careers in healthcare, students had the opportunity to see the environment firsthand, ask questions, interact with professionals, and discover the variety of roles required to support a modern healthcare system.

Healthcare extends far beyond the roles young people might immediately associate with a hospital. Technology, data, operations, patient experience, skilled trades, administration and many other disciplines contribute to how healthcare organizations operate, innovate and care for their communities.

“There is something special about giving young people the opportunity to experience a workplace firsthand, meet the people behind it, and see possibilities they may never have considered," says Martha Jez, CEO and Co-Founder of Fair Chance Learning. "Take Our Kids to Work Day is a reminder that learning comes to life when students can connect what they are learning today with where it might take them tomorrow.”

The experience reflected the value of experiential learning in helping students connect education with the real world. By putting young people inside workplaces and giving them opportunities to engage directly with professionals, Take Our Kids to Work Day helped turn abstract ideas about the future into tangible possibilities.
