UAE to restrict students from enrolling at UK universities
Authorities in the UAE are particularly worried that students could be influenced by Islamist groups on British campuses, with a focus on the Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational organization classified as a terrorist group in the Emirates. While the grants are no longer available, students are still permitted to study in the UK at their own expense.
Last June, the UAE’s higher education ministry released a list of universities eligible for scholarship funding, which did not include any institutions in the UK. According to sources familiar with the discussions, this exclusion was deliberate and the recent decision had been under consideration for some time. “[The UAE] don’t want their kids to be radicalized on campus,” a source explained.
The UAE has long taken action against the Muslim Brotherhood, an international Islamist network that originated in Egypt in the 1920s and gained influence during the 2011 Arab Spring. Those uprisings, driven by Islamist movements, toppled several governments across the Middle East and North Africa, leaving countries such as Syria and Libya in prolonged conflict.
The Emirates has banned the Muslim Brotherhood domestically and has advocated for its recognition as a terrorist group internationally. The organization is already outlawed in several countries, including Russia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and others.
